"Social, technological, and economic drivers are transforming education around the world. As globalization encompasses local economies like never before, the development of a skilled workforce becomes a genuinely international concern. And as human capital becomes the chief source of economic value, education and training become lifelong endeavors for the vast majority of workers.”
- Peter J. Stokes, Eduventures.com, 1999

eLearning, "e" learning. However  you etch  it,  definitions thrive.e-Learning is the convergence of the web and learning on all levels, whether it be elementary school, college, or business. e-Learning is the coalescent term to describe the fields of Online Learning, Web-Based Training, and Technology-Delivered Education. The efficiency of an e-learner's perception is greatly enhanced through student-centered (usability) design. For example, students remember more information from a text book that is well organized, with all-embracing visuals, manifestation/interaction points, clear headings, etc. e-Learning is made up of several methods of learning, which are enhanced or facilitated by technology. As a constituent of e-Learning, web-based or online learning is likely to be the fastest-growing technique for delivering education and training.

Modern e-Learning solutions recognize the importance of learning as a social process, offering possibilities for collaboration with other learners, for interaction with the content and for guidance from teachers, trainers and tutors. These learner-centered approaches put the learners back in command, with a wealth of learning resources at their fingertips, customized to their individual needs. Teachers and trainers however, continue to play a central role, using virtual and traditional face-to-face interactions with their students in a 'blended' approach.

e-Learning represents the whole class of technology-based learning, while online learning is synonymous with web-based learning. In this case, online learning is actually a subset of e-Learning. The term e-Learning covers a wide set of applications and processes, including computer-based learning, Web-based learning, virtual classrooms, and digital collaboration. We define e-Learning as the delivery of content via all electronic media, including the Internet, intranets, extranets, satellite broadcast, audio/video tape, interactive TV, and CD-ROM. Yet, e-Learning is defined more narrowly than distance learning, which would include text-based learning and courses conducted via written correspondence.

Terms like e-Learning, Technology-based learning, and Web-based learning are defined and used differently by different organizations and user groups. As the world of e-Learning evolves, online learning constitutes just one part of technology-based learning and describes learning via Internet, intranet, and extranet. Varying in the levels of sophistication, a basic online learning program includes the text and graphics of the course, exercises, testing, and tracking test scores and assessments. A sophisticated online learning program includes animations, simulations, audio and video sequences, peer and expert discussion groups, online mentoring, external links to additional material on the Web, etc.

e-Learning eliminates barriers associated with traditional classroom training. It overcomes barriers of cost, time, distance and socioeconomic status, allowing people to take charge of their own lifelong learning. It has been said that online learning will rapidly become one of the most cost-effective ways to educate the world's expanding workforce. Through e-Learning, students can access instructional content inexpensively and get trained on the latest skills in demand. e-Learning offers flexibility and convenience, and can quickly reach students anywhere, at any time. Educators and learning organizations are especially enthusiastic about the potential of e-Learning. As the education sector moves on-line and as young people embark on the school-to-work transition, e-Learning offers a unique opportunity to combine the power of technology and global networks with the infinite economic potential that is released when people acquire, create and apply knowledge and skills.
